Coronavirus LIVE: India Reports Over 54 Lakh COVID-19 Cases, 87,882 Deaths So Far

New Delhi: 

India's coronavirus tally crossed the 55-lakh mark with a spike of 75,083 cases and 1,053 deaths today. However, the country has achieved record recoveries of 1,01,468 COVID-19 patients in the last 24 hours, the Health Ministry data shows. This is the fourth day when the number of daily recoveries is higher than the daily cases.

With almost 45 lakh people (44,97,868) having beaten COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, the overall recovery rate has increased to 80.86 per cent. The active cases in the 24-hour period reduced to 9,75,861, these account for 17.54 per cent of all cases.

Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has informed the Lok Sabha that over four coronavirus vaccines are in advanced stages of pre-clinical trial in India. Amid rising cases, Rajasthan has imposed prohibitory orders in 11 districts, including state capital Jaipur, from today. 

Ten districts in Chhattisgarh, including state capital Raipur, have been put under lockdown from today. India is the country with the second-highest coronavirus caseload in the world after the United States.

Coronavirus News: Odisha Reports 4,189 New Cases, 11 Deaths
Odisha today reported 4,189 new cases, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the state to 1,88,311, reported news agency ANI. As per the state health department bulletin, 11 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, leading the death count to 721. 3,704 patients have recovered, taking the total COVID-19 recoveries to 1,49,379. There are 38,158 active cases in the state.

Russia to register second COVID-19 vaccine by October 15: Report
 
Russia expects to register a second potential vaccine against COVID-19 by October 15, the TASS news agency cited Russian consumer safety watchdog Rospotrebnadzor as saying.
 
The vaccine has been developed by Siberia's Vector Institute, which completed early-stage human trials of the vaccine last week. Russia registered its first vaccine candidate, developed by Moscow's Gamaleya Institute, in August.
 
Late-stage trials, involving at least 40,000 people, are ongoing.

India trials for Russia's Sputnik-V vaccine could start in the next few weeks: Official
 
Dr Reddy's Laboratories Ltd could begin late-stage Indian clinical trials of Russia's potential coronavirus vaccine in the next few weeks, an executive at the Indian drugmaker said.
 
Indian trials of the Sputnik-V vaccine candidate, being developed by Russia's sovereign wealth fund, will enroll 1,000-2,000 participants and be conducted at multiple government and private hospitals across the country, Deepak Sapra, CEO for API and pharmaceutical services at Dr Reddy's, said.

PM to review status of COVID-19 response in 7 states, UTs tomorrow
 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a high-level virtual meeting with the Chief Ministers and Health Ministers of seven COVID high burden States/Union Territories (UT) to review the status and preparedness of COVID response and management on Wednesday.
 
These states and the UTs include Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, and Punjab.
 
According to the Health Ministry, more than 63 percent of the active cases of coronavirus in the country are concentrated in these seven States/ UT. They also account for 65.5 percent of the total confirmed cases and 77 percent of the total deaths. Along with the other five states, Punjab and Delhi have reported an increase in the number of cases being reported recently.

Ladakh COVID-19 death count rises to 50, total cases 3,832
 
The coronavirus death count has risen to 50 in Ladakh as one more patient died due to the disease, while 79 new infections took the caseload to 3,832, officials said.
 
There are 1,047 active coronavirus cases in the Union Territory now, of which 591 are in Leh and 456 in Kargil district, the officials said.
 
A total of 2,735 patients, 71 percent of the total caseload, have recovered till Monday evening, they said.
